We just had an election in Ontario... and nobody won.
The voter turnout was worse than previous, the incumbent won with a slight increase, the leading Opposition leader lost his seat, and the parties who followed-on stayed as followers-on. A proposal to change the way the people are represented failed miserably.
The people are frustrated... they no longer feel they have a voice in this 4-year dictatorship "democracy", so they don't bother to vote.
The press, instead of behaving responsibly and covering all the issues, focused on a single "popular" issue and let nobody else get in a word edgewise.
Personally, in the absebce of civilised, reasonable political leaders I voted for one of the minority parties. At the last moment I realised I was bitching about the way things were done so, despite previous views that it simply put 29 more pigs into the feeding frenzy at the public trough, I voted FOR the change in representation.
So the end result is that millions more of the taxpayer's money has been spent promoting all of the unsuitable candidates with unsupportable policies... there was no one candidate who was saying all the right things... the Premier got back in with a "historic" mandate from the people, his blondness the Mayor is back in the city's hot seat to tax us even further to death, and business, as they say, is as usual.
What's wrong with a "None of the Above" option at the bottom of every public ballot across the country? With consequences, of course... "NOTA" winning the ballot - by even one vote - invokes the rejection of each and evry candidate on that ballot and their being banned from standing for any public office for the next 10 years or three terms, whichever is longer.
Maybe someone should start a "NOTA" party... and start the ball rolling by fielding candidates that way!!
And why can't we vote for more than our immediate local politician/councillor? If I hate my local pol but like his party's policies, what does that do to my choices?
In this election, not once did any of those on our ballot for election did a single thing to make himself/herself known personally to either myself or my wife. We're now electing strangers we know nothing about...
No wonder I have no time or trust for politicians... in the main they seem to be greedy egomaniacs feeding on a huge salary at the public trough while doing as little as possible, taking extensive holidays, and making brief public appearances. I am sure there are some who are honest and do a hard day's work, but where and who the heck are they??
